Smoking serves to add more flavor to meats that do not accrue a lot of flavor during the curing process. Once a meat is cured, it is either sold as-is, as Black Forest ham is, or it is smoked first. When it comes to meat flavorings, there are several, including maple, hickory-smoked and hardwood-smoked. Once removed from cold storage, the ham is air-cured for an additional two weeks before going on the market. Though the ham may look bad, the black skin is actually what gives it its distinctive flavor. It is during this period which the ham develops its trademark black skin. The temperature of the container holding the ham must not reach more than 77 degrees Fahrenheit for several weeks. Once the salt is taken out, the meat is given an additional two weeks to age.Īfter that four-week stretch of curing, the meat is cold-smoked using juniper brush or sawdust and fir. The meat is given two weeks to cure, after which the salt is removed. The first step in producing this deli favorite is to salt and season the raw ham with pepper, garlic, juniper berries, coriander and other spices. It typically takes up to three months to produce from start to finish. The original Black Forest ham is a variety of dry-cured smoked ham. Of course, only EU companies recognize this distinction, and several meat manufacturers throughout North America sell their own versions of the German delight. In Europe, deli meat manufacturers may only sell Black Forest ham if the ham comes from and is manufactured in the Black Forest region in Germany. Though it is another classic pattern, it varies from the colonial grids because they are typically asymmetrical. It offers a conventional look as it divides the panes into four lites. This pattern is often in double-hung windows. This lives up to its name and evokes a casual vibe. It will do a great job of updating your old home or sprucing up a new custom-built one. This is the perfect choice when you want a clean look with a classic charm. This colonial grid pattern is commonly found in these housing architectural themes: However, it will also work well for large, static, picture windows that you do not operate. A popular choice for this look is the double-hung window design. These segments create the appearance of smaller, individual windows within the larger frame. Typically, they divide windowpanes into nine, six, or four sections. As a result, you will have a window that looks beautiful and traditional. It will divide the pane into even and well-proportioned panes. These grids are partitions utilized to visually divide your window into smaller sections to make them look more pleasing to the eyes. Since modern buildings are more structurally sound, these window implements are included not for their supportive function but their aesthetic appeal. Today, window manufacturers offer a variety of grid designs and may call them grilles, muntin, or dividers. However, most window companies today do not make a distinction between the differences of the industry jargon because homeowners are not concerned about technicalities. ![]() They are supportive devices, especially for older buildings that could not carry the weight of a large window in the walls. For example, muntin applies to inner vertical pieces in the window, while the outer pieces forming the frame are rails and stiles. Meanwhile, something like an old-school window muntin or mullion provides vertical support to hold a big window in place. Notably, some people use these grids for their aesthetic purpose. Annotations in English texts Annotations in Spanish texts French AnnotationsĮnter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. One of the most important skills I teach my students as we begin to work on close reading is how to annotate texts. Here are some annotations that I have students make in English and in Spanish: often, I will only tell students to mark just 3-5 of these in a given text. For the struggling reader, this gives them focus and helps to tune out the din that all too often accompanies the act of reading. Print and copy double sided for students to use as they are annotating text. It helps them to be strategic readers and to read for a purpose. Close reading assistance, great for K - 12th grade, bookmarks, collaborative conversation frames, common core aligned, reading informational text, reading literature, listening and speaking. Whether you are able to provide students with their own copy of a text (remember that copyright prohibits you from photocopying many books, even when you own a class set!) or have them make their annotations on sticky notes, marking up the text allows students to engage with it. One tool that I use in my own academic reading and that my students enjoyed as well is annotating. Our students needed support in comprehending texts at the most basic level: what does the text say explicitly? Why I like annotation This one was a big focus at my school because our students were struggling readers, and their performance on reading comprehension assessments reflected that. One Common Core Anchor Standard for reading is that students read closely to understand what a text says explicitly. While I oppose the adoption of the CCSS, I do not deny that in and of themselves, the individual standards are worthy goals to work toward. I have my students hold up the page while reading, then lay it down to indicate they are finished with their read.In a Title 1 school on a Level 5 plan for improvement in the heat of Common Core adoption, the standards were a big part of our daily conversation. It’s so nice to have an “anchor text” to tie all of the standards together. I use this book to apply each of the RL standards to it along the way, not just when I’m teaching theme. I know that copying text is very controversial, and copyright infringement is a real concern with close reading, but students need to annotate the text. We don’t see a lot of these, but looking at past pricing puts an average somewhere in the $8k arena. The current price is a bargain for a vintage Katana, although with over 100 watchers it will surely climb before auction end. This bike is currently at $4,500 with several days to go – and what appears to be NO Reserve. That likely means carbs and tires, and any other pieces that have gone brittle with age. The seller notes that due to the time it has sat it will need to be serviced. Today’s bike is more on the show side of the fence, having traveled only 6,000 miles in its life and being the resident of a private collection. While never a canyon carver in its day, Katanas today are best utilized for more genteel rides and for the show. It has been parked for quite a while and is NOT READY TO RIDE This particular bike is part of a collection which is being sized down. The Katana, named for the famous Japanese sword, first appeared at the Intermot show in Cologne in May 1980, and production examples appeared a year later with only a few changes from the show bike. Ex-BMW designers Hans-Georg Kasten and Hans Muth partnered with Brit Jan Fellstrom to overhaul the Suzuki lineup. The Katana project actually began in Germany with a company called Target Design in 1979 with Target Design to improve Suzuki’s GS1100. The 1100cc model of 1983 replaced the 1982 1000cc model which was supposed to be part of a homologation program to make them eligible for Superbike racing. You are looking at a great condition 1983 Suzuki GS1100S Katana, one of the iconic bikes of the early 1980s. While some technology peeked its way into the build (4-valve heads, anti-dive fork), the Katana was really a tarted up, big motor bike. Ancillary components hang off the end of the crank, making this bike impossibly wide. Wheels are 19 inchers, likely chosen as much for style as performance. Beneath the styling, the rest of the bike was surprisingly pedestrian a stock GS1000 chassis complete with twin shocks. Stuffed full of a DOHC, 1100cc in-line monster of a motor, the Katana was claimed to be the fastest mass-production motorcycle of the day with 80+ HP (!). But the Katana wasn’t just another pretty face. ![]() The Katana was the most visually extreme, but the XN85 Turbo and full range of GS models all retained key elements and lines of the Katana. The seller has provided an accurate account of how the design of the Katana came to be, but fails to note the pedigree of Muth (long time BMW designer responsible for the R90S, R100S, R100RS and R65LS to name a few), and the extent to which the Katana design language extended throughout the Suzuki model range. Yet for a brief period of time the Suzuki Katana was top dog – and remains an iconic model even today. Suzuki gamely fought back with the likes of the Gen I GSX-R, but the era of air-cooling was headed the way of the dinosaur. By 1984 the Kawasaki Ninja made the Katana a hot-rod relic, and the remainder of the Big Four were close behind. Unfortunately, that pinnacle was really a precipice the new world of liquid cooling, single shock swing arms, GP-inspired 16-inch front wheels, five valves per cylinder and aluminum perimeter chassis was just around the corner. Like the last of the front-engine Formula 1 racers, the Katana was visually stunning and stood at the pinnacle of old-school performance. And while that is an accurate tag line, the truth is it sort of oozed its way boldly out of the 1970s.
